Cervical screening – still vital even if you’ve had the HPV vaccine

Cervical screening (smear tests) saves lives, and we are encouraging all eligible patients to make sure they are up to date with their screening.

If you have received an invitation letter or text and have not yet booked, please contact the practice to arrange an appointment. If you think you may be overdue, get in touch and we can check your record.

I’ve had the HPV vaccine – do I still need a smear test?

Yes. Even if you have had the HPV vaccine, it is still very important to attend for cervical screening when invited. This is because:

  • The HPV vaccine protects against the most common high‑risk types of HPV, but not all of them.
  • It greatly reduces your risk of cervical cancer, but does not remove the risk completely.
  • Cervical screening can pick up high‑risk HPV and early cell changes that the vaccine cannot fully prevent.
  • Having both the HPV vaccine and regular cervical screening gives you the best possible protection.

What does cervical screening do?

Cervical screening checks the health of the cervix and looks for high‑risk HPV and cell changes that could, if left untreated, develop into cancer. Detecting these changes early means they can usually be treated before they become a problem.

We know some people feel anxious, embarrassed or unsure about having a smear test. Our nursing team are experienced, friendly and will do their best to help you feel comfortable, answer any questions and take things at your pace.
